Wopsononock Post Office

 

The Wopsononock post office was originally established as Stains, in Cambria County October 31, 1891. It moved into 
Blair County, April 1, 1892 and discontinued Nov. 20, 1897 and mail was directed to Altoona. Charles V. Stains 
was appointed postmaster October 31, 1891 and Ira J. Williams was appointed postmaster August 24, 1892 .
The post office was located on one of the highest points of the Allegheny range of mountains on the Altoona & Beech Creek railroad, 
popularly known as the Wopsononock Railroad which extended from Juniata to Dougherty coal mines. 
It served the large hotel and cottages and employees of the mines in the neighborhood until the office was discontinued.
