Basic Installation instructions
Setting up Dial-up Networking
- Find out what version of Windows you have. If
you have Windows 98, continue. If you have some other version, check
out the other setup guides.
- Double-click on the My Computer icon on
the Desktop.
- Double-click on Dial-Up Networking
- If there are any other icons than Make New
Connection, ask the user if they use them. If they don't know
assume not and delete them. To delete: Right-click on the icon
and choose delete. Click Yes
- Double-click on the Make New Connection

- In the Type a name for the computer you are
dialing: box, type pennswoods
- Click Next
- In the Telephone number: box, type
the local pennswoods.net modem dial-up number. Don't put anything
in the area code box!
- Click Next
- Click Finish
- Right-click on the pennswoods icon
- Click Properties
- On the General tab, about half way down the window,
Uncheck the Use area code and dialing properties checkbox.
- Click on the Server Types tab at the top
of the window
- Uncheck Log onto network
- Uncheck NetBEUI, towards the bottom of
the screen
- Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible
- Click OK
- Close the Dial-Up Networking window.

Configuring Internet Explorer

- Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon
on the Desktop
- Click on Properties
- If this icon is not here, go to Start,
Settings, Control Panel. This will open the Control Panel
- Double-click on the Internet Options
icon. (It looks like a little globe with a wrench and hammer.)
- Continue...
- On the General tab (the first one that opens),
In the Homepage box, in the Address: box, type www.pennswoods.net
This can actually be any web address.
- Click on the Connection tab
- Check the circle beside Connect to the Internet
using a modem
- Click on the Settings button right next
to it.
- In the drop menu below Use the following Dial-Up
Networking Connection: select pennswoods by clicking on the
arrow and clicking
on pennswoods
- On the same window, type your user name into the
User: box
- Type your password into the Password: box
- Click OK
- Click Apply
- Click OK
- Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking on
the icon on the Desktop or going to Start, Programs, Internet Explorer.
If it's not in either place, refer it to tech support.
- When the Connect to window comes up, click
Work Offline or Cancel or just close the window.
- Close the Internet Explorer window
- Skip to the Outlook

- Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon
on the Desktop
- Click on Properties
- If this icon is not here, go to Start,
Settings, Control Panel. This will open the Control Panel
- Double-click on the Internet Options
icon. (It looks like a little globe with a wrench and hammer.)

my default connection
- In the white box labelled Dial-up settings,
check if pennswoods is listed. If it is, does it say (Default)
beside it?
- If not, click on pennswoods then click
on the Set Default button
- Click on the Settings button. A new window
called pennswoods settings will open.
- In the User name: type your Pennswoods
user name
- In the Password: box, type your password
- Click OK
- Click Apply
- Click OK
- Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking on
the icon on the Desktop or going to Start, Programs, Internet Explorer.
If it's not in either place, refer it to tech support.
- When the Connect to window comes up, click
Work Offline or Cancel or just close the window.
- Close the Internet Explorer window
- Skip to the Outlook
Express setup
Configuring Outlook Express

Internet Mail. Comes with Windows 95, will
only be found on Win95 without Outlook Express (and probably with
Internet Explorer 3). Recommend upgrade to a newer version. |

Outlook Express 4. Comes with Internet Explorer
4 on Windows 98. May be found on Windows 95 if upgraded. |

Outlook Express 5. Comes with Internet Explorer
5 Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, and Windows ME. May be found on
Win95 or 98 if upgraded. |
Configuring Outlook
Express 4 & 5
- Double-click on the Outlook Express icon
on the Desktop.
- Click on Start, Programs, Outlook Express.
If it's not there, check to see if there's an Internet Explorer
folder. It may be in there. If not, refer it to tech support.
- Setup can go two ways from here.
=> If you're prompted for your user name,
continue here. If you're prompted make a new connection, you skipped
a step.Otherwise, skip to the next section.
- In the Display name: box, type your
real name
- Click Next
- In the Email address: box, type your
email address. Type it in the form username@pennswoods.net
- Click Next
- This screen should say My incoming mail
server is a [POP3] server
- In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
box, type mail.pennswoods.net
- In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:
box, type mail.pennswoods.net
- Click Next
- In the POP Account name: box, type
your user name
- In the Password: box, type your password
- Click Next
Outlook Express 4 only:
- Click Next
- Click in the circle beside I Will establish
my internet connection manually
- Click Next
- Click Finish
- Close Outlook Express
=> If the main Outlook Express screen comes
up, skip to here from the previous section beginning.
- If you're prompted with the Connect to
window, click Work Offline, Cancel or just close
the window.
- If you get any error windows, click the Hide
button
- Click on Tools at the top of the screen
- Click on Accounts
- Click on the Mail tab
- If there are any account listed in the
Accounts column, you may delete them by clicking
on the account you want to delete, then clicking on the Remove
button.
- Click on the Add button
- Click on Mail
- In the Display name: box, type your
real name
- Click Next
- In the Email address: box, type your
email address. Type it in the form username@pennswoods.net
- Click Next
- This screen should say My incoming mail
server is a [POP3] server
- In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
box, type mail.pennswoods.net
- In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:
box, type mail.pennswoods.net
- Click Next
