Basic Installation instructions

Setting up Dial-up Networking
  1. Find out what version of Windows you have. If you have Windows 98, continue. If you have some other version, check out the other setup guides.
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
  3. Double-click on Dial-Up Networking
  4. If there are any other icons than Make New Connection, ask the user if they use them. If they don't know assume not and delete them. To delete: Right-click on the icon and choose delete. Click Yes
  5. Double-click on the Make New Connection icon
  6. In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing: box, type pennswoods
  7. Click Next
  8. In the Telephone number: box, type the local pennswoods.net modem dial-up number. Don't put anything in the area code box!
  9. Click Next
  10. Click Finish
  11. Right-click on the pennswoods icon
  12. Click Properties
  13. On the General tab, about half way down the window, Uncheck the Use area code and dialing properties checkbox.
  14. Click on the Server Types tab at the top of the window
  15. Uncheck Log onto network
  16. Uncheck NetBEUI, towards the bottom of the screen
  17. Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible
  18. Click OK
  19. Close the Dial-Up Networking window.
Configuring Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer 4. Comes with Windows 98
Internet Explorer 5. Comes with Windows 98SE. May be found on Win98 if upgraded.
Configuring Internet Explorer 4
  1. Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the Desktop
  2. Click on Properties
    • If this icon is not here, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel. This will open the Control Panel
    • Double-click on the Internet Options icon. (It looks like a little globe with a wrench and hammer.)

  3. On the General tab (the first one that opens), In the Homepage box, in the Address: box, type www.pennswoods.net This can actually be any web address.
  4. Click on the Connection tab
  5. Check the circle beside Connect to the Internet using a modem
  6. Click on the Settings button right next to it.
  7. In the drop menu below Use the following Dial-Up Networking Connection: select pennswoods by clicking on the arrow and clicking on pennswoods
  8. On the same window, type your user name into the User: box
  9. Type your password into the Password: box
  10. Click OK
  11. Click Apply
  12. Click OK
    • Close the Control Panel
  13. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking on the icon on the Desktop or going to Start, Programs, Internet Explorer. If it's not in either place, refer it to tech support.
  14. When the Connect to window comes up, click Work Offline or Cancel or just close the window.
  15. Close the Internet Explorer window
  16. Skip to the Outlook Express setup
Configuring Internet Explorer 5
  1. Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the Desktop
  2. Click on Properties
    • If this icon is not here, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel. This will open the Control Panel
    • Double-click on the Internet Options icon. (It looks like a little globe with a wrench and hammer.)

  3. On the General tab (the first one that opens), In the Homepage box, in the Address: box, type www.pennswoods.net This can actually be any web address.
  4. Click on the Connection tab
  5. Click in the circle beside Always dial using my default connection
  6. In the white box labelled Dial-up settings, check if pennswoods is listed. If it is, does it say (Default) beside it?
  7. If not, click on pennswoods then click on the Set Default button
  8. Click on the Settings button. A new window called pennswoods settings will open.
  9. In the User name: type your Pennswoods user name
  10. In the Password: box, type your password
  11. Click OK
  12. Click Apply
  13. Click OK
    • Close the Control Panel
  14. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking on the icon on the Desktop or going to Start, Programs, Internet Explorer. If it's not in either place, refer it to tech support.
  15. When the Connect to window comes up, click Work Offline or Cancel or just close the window.
  16. Close the Internet Explorer window
  17. Skip to the Outlook Express setup
Configuring Outlook Express
Internet Mail. Comes with Windows 95, will only be found on Win95 without Outlook Express (and probably with Internet Explorer 3). Recommend upgrade to a newer version.
Outlook Express 4. Comes with Internet Explorer 4 on Windows 98. May be found on Windows 95 if upgraded.
Outlook Express 5. Comes with Internet Explorer 5 Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, and Windows ME. May be found on Win95 or 98 if upgraded.

Configuring Outlook Express 4 & 5
  1. Double-click on the Outlook Express icon on the Desktop.
    • Click on Start, Programs, Outlook Express. If it's not there, check to see if there's an Internet Explorer folder. It may be in there. If not, refer it to tech support.
  2. Setup can go two ways from here.

    => If you're prompted for your user name, continue here. If you're prompted make a new connection, you skipped a step.Otherwise, skip to the next section.

    1. In the Display name: box, type your real name
    2. Click Next
    3. In the Email address: box, type your email address. Type it in the form username@pennswoods.net
    4. Click Next
    5. This screen should say My incoming mail server is a [POP3] server
    6. In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: box, type mail.pennswoods.net
    7. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: box, type mail.pennswoods.net
    8. Click Next
    9. In the POP Account name: box, type your user name
    10. In the Password: box, type your password
    11. Click Next
        Outlook Express 4 only:
      • Click Next
      • Click in the circle beside I Will establish my internet connection manually
      • Click Next
    12. Click Finish
    13. Close Outlook Express

    => If the main Outlook Express screen comes up, skip to here from the previous section beginning.

    1. If you're prompted with the Connect to window, click Work Offline, Cancel or just close the window.
    2. If you get any error windows, click the Hide button
    3. Click on Tools at the top of the screen
    4. Click on Accounts
    5. Click on the Mail tab
      • If there are any account listed in the Accounts column, you may delete them by clicking on the account you want to delete, then clicking on the Remove button.
    6. Click on the Add button
    7. Click on Mail
    8. In the Display name: box, type your real name
    9. Click Next
    10. In the Email address: box, type your email address. Type it in the form username@pennswoods.net
    11. Click Next
    12. This screen should say My incoming mail server is a [POP3] server
    13. In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: box, type mail.pennswoods.net
    14. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: box, type mail.pennswoods.net
    15. Click Next
    16. In the POP Account name: box, type your user name
    17. In the Password: box, type your password
    18. Click Next
    19. Click Next
    20. Click in the circle beside I will establish my internet connection manually
    21. Click Next
    22. Click Finish
    23. Close Outlook Express
