I'm getting an error "such-and-such program
performed an illegal operation"
-
When did it happen? Every time program
X starts? It's probably program X that's crashing or is causing the
crash. What is the name of the file displayed with the error?
-
Is Windows running properly?
-
When's the last time it was
restarted? Rebooting once a day is the best idea.

Try scandisking and defragmenting
your computer. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
Click on Scandisk. Let scandisk do a standard test on your C:
drive. When it is done, Click on Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Select the C: drive and let Defrag
do its thing, which may take several hours, depending on the state
of your computer. Refrain from doing other things on the computer
while Defrag is running, as it interferes with the program.
-
Sometimes, a file may be corrupted
and reinstalling Windows or the corrupted component of Windows is
the only option to fix these problems.
