Outlook Express Password Errors

What error numbers are you receiving when you attempt to check your email? An error ending with 90 or 92 often indicates a username/password problem. Remember, user names should be typed in all lower case and passwords are case sensitive.

Sometimes, however this error message literally means what it says: an invalid response was received from the mail server. While it is possible that the mail server is giving an error response, usually this is produced when the mail server set up by Norton antivirus malfunctions.

To check the case of your username and password in Outlook Express:

  • Click on Tools at the top of the screen
  • Click on Accounts
  • Click on the Mail tab
  • Click on your account
  • Click on the Properties button
  • Click on the Servers tab
  • Make sure the account name is in all lower case
  • Make sure the password is typed correctly. I suggest retyping it.
  • Click OK when you're through
  • Click Close
  • Try checking your email.
