Catching Incoming Voice Calls
Are you missing voice calls because your computer
doean't have a dedicated phone line? Here are a few links to software
that can catch your incoming phone calls. This software ranges from
free to fee, and supports various functions from callerID to voicemail.
Usually only busy call forwarding (Talk to your telephone company about
ordering this service.) is required to use these services. In the essential,
this is how it works:
- Someone makes a telephone call to your telephone
number while you're online.
- That call receives a busy signal from your number.
- The call is re-routed to another number via your
busy call forwarding service. This is the telephone number of the
call service you're using.
- The call service answers and takes the message.
- You receive notification - usually over your internet
connection - that someone called and the message they left.
Update:
The new v.92 standard supports "Modem-on-Hold". Essentially,
you may put your connection to the Pennswoods.net on hold while receiving
or making a voice call. Remember, you need a v.92-capable modem to
utilise such a connection!
Alternately, if you have a v.92 modem but are unable
to establish a v.92 connection due to line conditions you may enable
the 'disconnect on call-waiting' feature. The init string
AT+PCW=1 will cause your modem to disconnect if it detects
a call waiting signal. Look here
to see how and where to enter this init string.
Please note Pennswoods.net does not support any of this software.
