"I get an error saying I can't log on to server 127.0.0.1"

This error is caused by the mail server Norton Antivirus sets up on your computer not responding properly. Norton, as a matter of providing extra protection from virus sent via email, checks your mail, scans it, then makes it available on and email server on your local computer - also known as localhost or 127.0.0.1. Sometimes the Norton mail server malfunctions for whatever unknown reason. When this happens, the easiest option is to restore the normal setting in Outlook Express and let Norton re-configure itself and the mail client later. You may discover that even this does not solve the problem. In this case, disable Norton's email protection option. (Your computer will still be protected from viruses, just scanning on email as it arrives will be disabled.)

To Resolve the Problem:

  • Open Outlook Express
  • Click on Tools at the top of the screen
  • Click on Accounts
  • Click on the Mail tab
  • Click on the offending account
  • Click on the Properties button
  • Click on the Servers tab
  • The Incoming and Outgoing mail servers should be mail.pennswoods.net
  • The Account name is your Pennswoods.net user name
  • The Password is your password
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • The Outgoing mail port number should be 25, and the Incoming mail port number should be 110. If they are not, click on the Use Defaults button.
  • Click on the Apply button at the botton of the screen.
  • Click on the OK button
  • Click the Close button
