Installing a Modem

Here are some generic instructions on how to install a modem under Windows 9x. They are by no means meant to be a complete guide for everything, but some guidelines for most cases.

  1. If it is a hardware or jumpered modem, you may need to physically configure the modem to use the appropriate serial port, I/O address range, and interrupt request (IRQ) line. Be sure to choose a serial port, an I/O address range, and an IRQ line that is not already in use by another device. For information about how to configure the modem, consult the documentation included with the modem, or contact the modem's manufacturer.
  2. Turn off your computer, insert the modem in an open slot, and then turn the computer back on.
  3. The modem will most likely be detected when Windows starts. However, if the modem is not detected automatically when Windows starts, run the Install New Modem Wizard:
    1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
    2. In Control Panel, double-click Modems
    3. If you do not already have a modem installed in your computer, the Install New Modem Wizard starts automatically. If you already have a modem installed in your computer, click Add to start the Install New Modem Wizard.
    4. To install the modem after the Install New Modem Wizard starts, uncheck the "Don't detect my modem..." check box , then click Next.
    5. If the modem is still not detected, the modem's resources may be conflicting with another device or the COM port associated with the modem may need to be installed using the Add New Hardware wizard. After you correct the conflict or install the COM port, try installing the modem again.
  4. If the modem is detected, Windows will check if it currently has drivers for the modem. If it does, it will install the modem. If not, you will need to obtain a driver from the modem manufacturer to install the modem.
    1. Once you have the driver on your hard drive, floppy disk, etc; return to this point and then click on the Have Disk button
    2. Click the Browse button to browse to the driver location
    3. Once you have selected the approprite location, Click OK, OK
    4. Select the appriate driver from the Manufacturer/Model list then click Next
    5. You may need to select the COM port the modem is on. Click on it and then click OK
    6. When the modem has finished installing, click Finish
  5. Hopefully your modem is installed and working properly.
