RAS Error 680
680 - There is no dial tone.
This error is caused by a bad connection or a hardware problem in the modem. Somtimes the modem is at fault; surges on the telephone line will damage a modem in such a way that it is unable to pick up the telephone line. If this happens, the modem must be replaced.
- Trouble-shooting the problem:
- Connect a telephone to the telephone jack on the back of your modem while leaving the modem connected to the line.
In this configuration the dial tone should run from the wall jack, through your modem, and into the telephone.
- Pick up the receiver to see if you can hear a dial tone.
- If so, it's fairly safe to assume the wiring is fine and your modem is bad. You should call tech support for your computer or contact a computer repair shop.
- If not:
- Disconnect your telephone from the back of the modem
- Disconnect the wire running from the modem to the wall from the wall
- Connect the wire on the telephone into the wall jack
- Pick up the receiver on the telephone. Can you hear a dial tone?
- If so: The wire currently connected to the modem (That is the wire formerly connecting the modem to the wall jack.) is probably not good, or the modem is bad. Try replacing that wire with a known good one and try it again.
- If not: The wire, wall jack, and/or telephone is not working properly. Try another known good telephone and wire to determine if it's the jack or not.
- Sometimes, rarely, disabling the "Wait for dial tone before dialing." option on the Modems Control Panel can cause the modem the ignore its peculiar ideas about a dial tone and work anyway.
- Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
- Double-click on the Modems icon
- Highlight your modem if it's not already.
- Click on the Properties button
- Click on the Connection tab
- Uncheck the box next to Wait for dial tone before dialing, which is about half-way down the screen.
- Click OK
- Click Close
- Close the Control Panel
